Finished scanning over 700 negatives for a client this week! Absolutely gorgeous shots of France and Yellowstone. And all this was done on film! No digital preview to make sure everything was in focus, or had the correct lighting.

I love that film photography is making a comeback as a way to slow down and focus on being deliberate in what we choose to capture with our cameras.

This cute photo won a beauty contest! But sadly in the years since then, it was folded and stuck in a frame, leaving damage right across those sweet cheeks!

Thankfully I was able to repair the damage from the folding, as well as some spots of discoloration/mold that were starting to appear. One the digital restoration was done, I ordered a new giclée print (so fancy!). So happy that this beautiful portrait is back to its original, adorable glory!

Photos aren't the only thing you should think about preserving! When my grandparents passed away, I inherited a box of my dad's old letters to his family. My dad (in true Dad form) told me to "toss them." So of course I've been working on scanning them all!

I thought it would be a pretty quick and easy project since I could use my feed scanner. Did not count on the fact that most of the letters were written on what is basically tissue paper (they were sent via air mail, so the lighter the cheaper). So instead it's flatbed scanning, page by page!

Should you keep the originals? I generally say yes. There's something about tangible objects that makes us feel a deeper connection. But now I don't have to worry about his letters being destroyed or lost or cracking with age. I highly recommend having backup copies of all your precious memories, including those old letters!

This photo was taken from a roll of film that was well cared for (kept in a cool, dark, dry place), but it still started to degrade. Notice the blue spots on the developed photo or the red spots on the negative? I haven't been able to pinpoint exactly why this happened to this particular film, but it's a good reminder that old film, slides, and photos aren't permanent. They crack, they mold, they fade, they turn really weird colors...and sometimes it's really, really hard (or even impossible) to salvage them.

If you haven't digitized your photos/slides/negatives, please look into it sooner rather than later! I'm happy to help you out, but any digitizing you will actually do is better than none. With digital you can easily share them with your family, or have backups in various places should the unthinkable happen. If this is something you're interested in, please reach out!

Colorizing old photos can be a fun way to bring the past to life. It's also definitely an art form: tweaking colors, matching skin tones, etc. This was a very quick colorization I did of my grandpa.

I used AI (palette.fm, super cool!) to find a good base, then used photo editing to adjust colors and tones (like adding extra blue to his eyes).

Do you have a black and white or faded photo you'd like to see in color? Reach out!

Working with slides today! I've have gotten to experiment with lots of different techniques to find what works best. And dang, the quality of image from a slide?? Beautiful! Reach out if you have some slides you'd like digitized!

Getting a box like this to scan feels like a treasure hunt! I love seeing the moments that people have chosen to photograph. And now instead of being stuck in a box in the basement, they're all scanned and digitized so the family can see and share them. Please reach out if you're ready to do the same with your photos!
